Summary

Design and construction of a 3,000m3 green civic space over the operational northern rail line through St Leonards.  The concept to build a new recreational facility over rail airspace was championed by Lane Cove Council to provide local residents with much needed green space in a densely populated urban community.

The project also provided level connectivity with an adjacent mixed-use residential-commercial property for easy access.

Scope of Work

Arenco was responsible for all design and construction works related to the plaza including multi-disciplinary coordination of structure; architecture; urban design; civil works and drainage; electrical and comms; hydraulic; lift; landscaping; children’s play equipment; and public artwork.

The new works consisted of a Super-T bridge structure; lift; ramps; accessible walkways; landscaping; performance stage; bespoke playground apparatus; shade structures and seating areas with integrated electrical and comms provision for park users.

The adjacent roadway was regraded and surfaced including a new shared zone for pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Active park management systems such as irrigation, drinking fountains, electrical services and CCTV were provided throughout.

Significant Achievements

Liaising with authorities to facilitate delivery of, and placement into position of, Super-T girders over an active rail line during non train-running periods, including establishing a dual crane lift to install a bespoke 160 tonnes footpath girder.

Installation and utilisation of the largest tower crane available in the southern hemisphere, determined by reach and lifting capacity, to enable successful girder installation.
