Summary

Design and construction of a new entry portal structure at the Devonshire Street entrance including a new lift, escalators, stairs with paving and landscaping along Chalmers Street. The concourse level included a new ramp, lift and stairs to the subway tunnel, a new booking office, floor, ceiling, expanded ticket array and an extensive relocation and upgrade of services.

Scope of Work

One of a number of Easy Access Station Upgrade programs undertaken across the metropolitan network to provide independent access to rail services for those with disabilities, parents with young children and those traveling with heavy baggage.

Central Station is one of Sydney’s most recognisable landmarks and is a popular meeting point for travellers. Located at the southern end of Sydney CBD, it the largest railway station in Australia and a key interchange point between trains, buses, coaches and trams.

The station is serviced by 27 to 38 trains per hour in each direction, with additional trains during weekday peak hours.

Arenco undertook the design and construction of a new landmark entry portal structure of the Devonshire Street entrance, new lifts and escalators from street level to concourse levels, extensive services relocation, new concourse floor, ceiling and lighting, upgrading of the booking office and expansion of the ticket gate array.

Significant Achievements

The project was completed with no lost time injuries.

The work was directly adjacent to and over live pedestrian movements and there was no closure of station operations.

A staged construction of the operational booking office ensured there was no disruption to commuter services.
