Summary

S60 state heritage listed Blackheath Station was upgraded to provide compliant accessibility for local community. The project included three new lifts replacing the previous non-compliant level crossing, scenic upgrades to station entries, heritage interpretative artwork, services upgrades, carpark and kiss and ride interchange upgrades, replacement of the platform surface, tactiles and new signage. 

Scope of Work

Arenco was responsible for all the design and construction works to the station which involved the demolition of the existing over track level crossing, 3 new lifts connecting to the existing footbridge and modifications of the existing footbridge. Existing services were upgraded were required and existing heritage platform building modified to DSAPT compliance.

New compliant pathways were provided from the existing car park and Kiss and Ride / Taxi interchange on either side of the station to provide accessible access to the station entries and platform via the existing footbridge as well as introducing new landscaped zones.

The platform area was resurfaced with the provision of new tactile indicators, services upgrades and wayfinding signage. 

Significant Achievements

Located in a sub-alpine region of the Blue Mountains, managing the impacts of snow on the design and construction of Blackheath was a successful achievement.

Significant to S60 state heritage register, design of the project was successfully collaborated with Heritage and Urban design specialists to obtain Heritage NSW approval on time.

Successfully worked in areas with difficult or restricted access subject to live rail and commuter movements.

Innovative construction of the lift shafts in the rail corridor using prefabricated modular sections that were installed during a single possession weekend.
